excited to welcome back WNC based artist, Allison Weeks Thomas. Allison’s whimsical, romantic paintings graced our walls to much acclaim in February of 2012 and we are delighted to exhibit her latest work, a collection entitled, “Wildlings.”

Allison’s bio reads: Art and creative writing have long been passions of the Eastern North Carolina native, Allison Weeks Thomas.  She attended the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where she earned her BA in Studio Art in 2004. In 2009, she earned her MA in Illustration Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design.

Allison’s work in mixed media art explores her love of the ordinary and not so ordinary, a merging of fantasy and reality. When she grows up, she aspires to be an illustrator and writer of children’s books.

Cutting up bits and putting them back together is what I do as a quilter. I have borrowed that same methodology and applied it to my photography work and call it “photopiecing”.

Fascination with color & pattern informs all the work I do. Rather than create those patterns, I prefer to make do with what comes to me naturally…. The patterns and colors I work with are what I see around me, here in the River Arts District and when I travel, through the lens of my camera. This work challenges me to slow down & move quietly, observing the beauty in the mundane… meditation at its best.

Taking that which the world offers, shaping it in such a way as to abstract, with the details still in place. Layering, mixing, obscuring, combining, “getting it to feel right” is the challenge… Yet moving beyond simple representation to touch an emotional place… sometimes joyful, preferably quiet, sometimes somber… to communicate the world I inhabit every day of my life.

As many of you have heard, Jason was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer (stage 4). He is no longer able to work. Jason has a 4 year old daughter, and he and his wife are expecting a second child in May. He is currently receiving care through the local VA Hospital, but may leave Asheville to seek more advanced treatments and be closer to extended family.

Many vendors have generously donated their products to enable us to pass along the maximum contribution to Jason & his family. In addition, we will host a silent auction featuring the work of local RAD artists, our Pink Dog Creative neighbors and a handful of our past Third Thursday featured artists. Original paintings, pottery, jewelry, furniture and high quality prints will be for sale. Other auction items include, exclusive bottles of wine, gift certificates from Sensibilities & Wink, tickets to an upcoming Blind Pig Supper Club, and much much more. The silent auction will take place in the Turquoise Building gallery (adjacent to the restaurant) from 5-10 p.m

Her artist statement reads: “Christine has found that working in encaustics has been a refreshing way to explore color and design without constraint. As a medium, encaustics lends itself to so many possibilities, such as layering, carving, and adding mixed media or collage. Carving designs and images into the wax and then filling those lines in with contrasting color is one of her favorite techniques to use, as well as embedding objects into the wax surface.

She delights in the fluid nature of the liquid wax when applying it, and manipulating it further through application of heat, and then other tools. Often layers are slyly revealed, offering visual intrigue and depth.”

Christine Dougherty is an artist working in Asheville’s River Arts District. She has been a part of the vibrant river arts community for many years and is a long time resident of Asheville. Originally from Jackson, Mississippi, she was taught drawing and painting from a very young age by her artist mother. Continuing the tradition, she acquired a B.F.A. from Savannah College of Art and Design before moving to the mountains of Western North Carolina.

Third Thursdays on Depot Street are a once/month happening showcasing the businesses, artists and galleries in this newly developed area of the River Arts District. Other events include an art reception at Nourish & Flourish as well as late studio hours at The Lift and Element Clay.

The Happiest Hour is our little love note to our local regulars, who are the ones who sustain us through the slower months. This is also an invitation to folks who’ve been wanting to come, but haven’t yet – for whatever reason.
